Stroke, or disruption in blood flow to the brain, is the third
leading cause of death in the United
States. But a stroke does not have to be fatal --
treatment within 60 minutes of the onset
of a stroke can help prevent permanent
disability. When a stroke is suspected, call
911 immediately. If the patient is categorized
as a "stroke alert," EMS (Emergency
Medical Services) will provide transport
to a designated stroke center for treatment.
This treatment is now available at
Wellington Regional Medical Center, which
has been designated as one of just nine
Primary Stroke Centers in Palm Beach
County. Wellington Regional earned its
Primary Stroke Center designation from the
Florida Agency for Health Care Administration
(AHCA), a state-regulated agency
that champions accessible, affordable,
quality healthcare for all Floridians. The
care provided to stroke patients must meet
national American Heart Association and
American Stroke Association guidelines.
When a stroke alert patient is
transported to Wellington Regional,
members of a Stroke Alert Team work
together to provide direct care to the
patient and assist the ER physician in the
rapid assessment, examination and
diagnosis of the acute stroke event. This
includes use of our teleneurology service.
Because "time is brain," rapid response
is essential for providing stroke patients
with the best chance of recovery. Additionally,
the potential for the administration
of the clot buster medication tPA for
acute ischemic stroke is time-sensitive.
The goal in the management of all
stroke patients is to improve neurological
recovery and reduce the incidence of
disability. Wellington Regional is proud to
increase the level of care we offer to the
community with this Primary Stroke
Center designation.
