Your annual mammogram at The Women's Imaging Center indicates an area of concern. Frightening thoughts may fill your head. Where do you turn? What lies ahead?

Should you find yourself in this situation, it may be comforting to know that there is support available at The Women's Imaging Center at Wellington. Barbara White, RN, a registered nurse with expertise in breast health, serves as a patient care navigator for women and men with abnormal mammograms.

Ms. White, who spent many years working as an oncology nurse, typically introduces herself to patients once they learn they have an abnormal mammogram. As a patient advocate, she will provide educational and emotional support and guidance through the steps of obtaining additional imaging or biopsy needed to evaluate suspicious breast tissue.

Ms. White may help coordinate these appointments and helps familiarize patients with the facility and staff. To provide additional support, she will also accompany women during their procedures and will follow up after tests and biopsies to see how patients are doing.

"I'm one more person who can help a patient get through a difficult time," Ms. White says. "Fortunately, most women eventually hear good news because the majority of suspicious lesions are not cancerous. But that doesn't make the process any easier for women when they're going through it."

While Ms. White focuses her attention on women who have abnormal mammograms, she's found that her role has expanded. "If women are afraid to have mammograms, I will try to help them feel more at ease," she says. "And, if biopsies come back positive, I'm here to offer support and discuss options to help women make informed decisions.

"I'd like to be thought of as a knowledgeable friend who can be counted on for factual information, support and comfort, someone who's rooting for you all the way," Ms. White continues.

To make an appointment for your annual mammogram, please call The Women's Imaging Center at 561-798-8513.
